Sourdough Bread in The Hunter Valley

Let's Talk

The Heart of Hunter Sourdough

At Bread Basket in the Hunter Valley, we bake sourdough the traditional way — slow-fermented for flavour and texture. Our Hunter Sourdough range is loved across the region.

Our sourdough journey began in the late 1990s, when Stewart trained at the Bread Research Institute and created our first cultures from local fruit. Today, those cultures live on in every loaf.

We also bake sourdough, pies, and cakes and offer catering and wholesale services across the Hunter Valley. Call us at (02) 4936 2226 to reserve your loaf.

LOCALLY INSPIRED

Our original cultures were made using Hunter Valley grapes and Mulbring peaches, giving our sourdough a unique local connection and a flavour story rooted in our region’s produce.

NATURALLY FERMENTED

We let wild yeasts and lactobacilli work their magic, developing flavour without bakers yeast or shortcuts, creating a tangy crumb and rustic crust loved by true sourdough fans.

What People Are Saying

Crafted Through Time

Sourdough is more than bread — it’s a living culture. By fermenting dough slowly, we allow natural yeasts to create the mild sour flavour and airy crumb that make Hunter Sourdough unique.

  • White Sourdough: Our classic loaf, light with a crisp crust.
  • Rye Sourdough: Earthy, hearty & packed with flavour.
  • Specialty Loaves: Options like ciabatta, focaccia, olive, & pumpkin & poppy seed.
  • Baguettes & More: Artisan favourites baked daily for every meal.

Every loaf of Hunter Sourdough reflects years of passion, experimentation and tradition. From the first starter to the final bake, our sourdough is made to be shared and enjoy.

  • What makes sourdough bread different from regular bread?

Sourdough is made using a natural starter of wild yeast and lactobacilli rather than commercial yeast. This long fermentation process creates a slightly tangy flavour, a chewy texture, and a crusty exterior that many bread lovers prefer.

  • Is sourdough bread healthier than white bread?

Sourdough is often considered easier to digest because the fermentation process breaks down some gluten and increases the availability of nutrients. It also has a lower glycaemic index compared to standard white bread, which means it can help avoid sudden spikes in blood sugar.

  • Is Bread Basket the home of the famous Hunter sourdough?

Yes, Bread Basket is proud to be the home of the original and much-loved Hunter sourdough — a local favourite that has been crafted using traditional methods since the late 1990s.
